Asanas= Exercise + A LOT MORE!!!

As I read all the post, I refer back to wonderul article by Brownstone, A (see links for detailed reference). Asanas are described as rich "proiprioceptive" food for the central nervous system/ CNS and thus a catalyst to normalization of tone and movement pattern. Another idea that is stressed is how emotional reactivity influences muscle tone and thus the underlying premise of training mind and creating minfulness. Kinesthetic, proprioceptive, and vestibular feedback is deemed very important for CNS organization and all asanas have adundant of that.
Please share from your experience and expertise what those "a lot more" are that give yoga its healing power. What makes asana application so potent opposed a similar exercise or pose performed?

Hello Rashmi, thanks for the invitation to post. First we have to address what we mean by yoga. For me it is a state of mind accessed by many different practices, from breath to chanting to physical movement and physical stillness. To work with people who have had strokes we have to create a new way whilst still embracing existing principles. The majority of existing yoga practices are just not accessible to stroke survivors.

In my experience we have to strip bare the essence of yoga and the postures and restructure them for our client group.

For example when I re-created the Cobra pose for stroke survivors, I looked at which areas of the body the pose is stretching and strengthening, then I look at my client group. Most of which couldn't get onto a yoga mat. I had to re-think how can these people get the benefits of that posture whilst sat in a chair or wheel chair.

Yoga is much more about the mind than the body, the body is simply a doorway into ourselves. I have witnessed people with little or no flexibility in my own classes enter states of yoga much more easily than people with very bendy bodies.

For stroke survivors with paralysis to one side of the body I use Visual Motor Rehearsal and ask them to picture the body performing the movement or posture.

What makes yoga so beneficial is the state of being reached through doing the practice, the practice is just a doorway to the experience, it is the experience gained not the physical practice which is yoga.

I have been working with stroke survivors using these techniques for over 2 years now. I also work with this approach in Care homes for the elderly.

I am currently writing a book on yoga in care homes which covers Yoga for people who have had strokes and all the postures and practices that I have created. The practices fuse Tai Chi, Yoga and meditation techniques.

I am hoping to run the first training course for professionals working in theses sector this year in the UK.

Well done for this blog spot, its an area that yoga can do wonders in but as yet is not that accessible.

Ms Grame,
Thank you for your post. I find it reinforcing as you state that most of the yogic techniques are inaccessible to stroke students and hence need for the adaptation as there is no doubt that they lend themselves well to addressing the limitations after stroke.
For sake of enhancing knowledge and rudimentary understanding, so how do you modify cobra pose for a wheelchair student? The pose helps strengthen back extensors, stimulates and stretches the abdominal viscera, and stretch chest muscles. So, stroke student could be helped into this pose by placing arms (affected arm may have to be guided and maintained) on the rims of the wheelchair and cued to extend, a thin bolster could be positioned as students is palced closer to the edge of the chair and then spine extension directed.....Points to be mindful of as this pose is promoted are attention to breath, preceeding visualization as you mention, and trying to sustain for as long as possible and comfortably.
Your forthcoming book is likely to be a valuable tool. Thank you for sharing that.
Looking forward to more feedback. Thank you for discussing a pose to make a point. An example can help highlight the key elements of yoga to a greater degree.

These are not classes for Yoga students with ailments, or for beginners who just "jumped off the couch." Power Yoga is a fantastic system of Yoga exercises, but if you are going to teach any form of Power Yoga classes, you have to be completely honest with prospective students.
